All right so I really don’t enjoy Glee all that much, the music is good, but it’s just so inconsistent in both writing and character development that I really don’t connect to it at all.
That being said, I really don’t think there’s been a show that’s examined coming out/being closeted quite as poignantly. I’m writing this because I flipped on the TV the other day and this most recent episode was playing, which would have been the first time I watched Glee in ages. And oh god this one part in Kurt’s speech to Dave had me holding back tears. Just that one fleeting glimpse of Dave exchanging a kiss with a man he loves and holding their child, in a future that only exists inside Dave’s head. Here’s this guy who was so full of loathing both self-induced and from society that he had to deal with his identity in the lowest, most twisted and despicable manner possible, which was by bullying Kurt. And just one quick look at what Dave longs for the most was the most emotionally rich way a character has been humanized on this show, for me. So many people fantasize of finding someone they love, a partner who they can share their life with. The need to feel loved is universal and is most often indulged in childlike but comforting daydreams. And just that one look into Dave’s imaginings combined with the shot of his face looking more blissful and content than we’ve ever seen it before was one of the most touching things I’ve seen on TV in a while.
