The first time Sherlock laid eyes on Gryffindor John Watson was as a first year, before the boy was even sorted. Bored out of his wits, Sherlock had decided to amuse himself with a game, trying to successfully sort his classmates before the Sorting Hat could call out a house. A boy smaller than most, John Watson had marched to the center of the hall with his head held high, an unassuming presence about him that belied the obvious inner Gryffindor. And, indeed, the Sorting Hat had barely touched the crown of Watson’s head before declaring Gryffindor as the boy’s destined house. The Gryffindors whooped and cheered, second year Greg Lestrade one of the loudest among them all, and Sherlock’s attention promptly moved to the next student in line to be sorted.

The first time Sherlock took notice of Gryffindor John Watson was in the corridors midway through his second year, when Donovan was cackling with her pet Ravenclaw Anderson about “the freaks of Slytherin”, sneering that one day the Third Wizarding War would be entirely their faults. Sherlock had been unimpressed, waiting for Lestrade to show up (the only one of the Gryffindors Sherlock found he could stand) and order them to knock it off. To his surprise, it wasn’t Lestrade’s voice that shouted, “If they do start it, it’d be only to shut you lot up, wouldn’t it?” in a deceptively mild tone. Though a third year, Donovan’s mouth snapped closed and she’d elbowed Anderson into submission. Sherlock supposed it had something to do with the clout he’d been hearing about Watson’s talents on the Quidditch field. He sniffed at the idiotic form of Gryffindor hierarchy and decided that perhaps his short list of tolerable Gryffindors could handle room for one more.

The first time Sherlock was affected by Gryffindor John Watson was toward the beginning of his fourth year, during a particularly loathsome Care of Magical Creatures class.
