Haha finally got around to watching the pilot!! I was kind of waiting to start it once I’d re-read the series but all of my Hannibal books are still at my parents and I was getting impatient lol (it’s not like I haven’t read Red Dragon a billion times already but still). Anyways I watched and I LIKED! Sooo obligatory pilot mini-review haha:

Mads Mikkelsen is excellent, and has the perfect blend of detached sympathy. I’m only one episode in, but I’m hoping we do get to see him snap, since one of the best parts about Hannibal Lecter is that he’s so charming and amiable…until he’s fucking not.

I liked Hugh Dancy too, especially his vibe in the crime-scene visions. The way in which they recreate his insight into psychopathic tendencies is EXACTLY how I pictured it in the books, so I loved that part. He seems a little two-dimensional so far, but I never really hold that against actors in early episodes of any series, as getting to see everyone warm up is part of the fun. He and Mads Mikkelsen have a pretty solid chemistry already, so looking forward to more rapport from them.

Jury’s out for me on Laurence Fishburne, though. While I like his charisma I reeeeally hope he doesn’t continue to ‘philosophize’ his way through every scene, as I don’t really buy that for someone who has an entire FBI department to run, “Behavioural Sciences” or not. I could do with a bit more efficiency in his delivery, but it might grow on me.

Right now I’d say the dialogue is distractingly clunky, but like I said, I find it hard to fault a show for some clumsiness at its very beginning, since everyone is still finding their feet, and what’s the point of a series if things don’t develop.

What’s really spot-on so far is the atmosphere. The way the trance-like sequences meet head on with stark reality is completely reminiscent of the writing in the books, and they’ve really managed to get it off the page.

Anyhoo, I watched it like 5 seconds ago and these are just my initial first impressions! Can’t wait to devour the rest. ha. ha. ha. ~sees myself out~
