Avengers: Film Noir AU

-Insert fancy backstory that people create when they make AU sets-

First time creating an alternate universe set. I wish I was more apt and less lazy at creating gifs, maybe this would have turned out prettier if it were gifs. But I just love film noir.

If you are a writer and you feel inspired, I give you my blessing to create something out of this. In fact, I would love it.

The Avengers - Disney Recast

Tony/Flynn Rider

It was really tempting to go with Kuzco, if only for the mannerisms alone. But Tony and Flynn both share a lot of traits that give their characters such great arcs. Both are smooth-talking, charming and devil-may-care types who are used to getting their own way. They each start out with very shallow motivations, but the more responsibility they gain the less superficial they eventually become. Both had lifestyles in which it was important to look out for number one. But when given the opportunity to do good, their natural kindness and loyalty shone through, proving their generosity to themselves and others. In the end they’ll always make the sacrifice play, if it’s for the greater good.

Thor/ Captain John Smith

Ok this is so so perfect and I’ll tell you why. These two have way more in common than just their flowing locks of blonde hair. Both are bold and natural leaders who have a lot of regard and affection for their men. They’re genuinely good guys, and will leap to defend their comrades without a second thought. They both begin as too arrogant for their own good (John: “I’ve seen hundreds of new worlds, Thomas. What could possibly be different about this one?”) and think they have nothing to learn. The exposure to an unfamiliar world gives each a dose of humility and provides them with the extra ounce of humanity they need in order to become truly worthy characters.

Clint/Prince Eric

Clint is the Avenger we know the least about, which makes him the most difficult to cast. But there’s a lot about Prince Eric that seems to fit. We know Clint to be very steady and always in control, and Eric has the same practicality about him, in that he’s taken so long to get married because he wants to be sure it’s the right girl. Both seem quite mild mannered but are daring when it comes down to it. Although they’re both human neither blinks at the idea of going head-to-head with supernatural forces, such as when Eric battles Ursula the sea witch. Apart from their bravery, both spend much of the movie being mind-controlled by the villain, and seem to share a particular affinity for redheads.

Bruce/Beast

Bruce and the Beast have very complex personalities, and are constantly at war with themselves. On the one hand they have their seemingly more controlled human side that they present to put others at ease. But they’re still at the mercy of their more primal urges which are always threatening to come out. It’s these animalistic instincts that make them unable to have the connections they need. Both need human love if they’re going to healthily balance their personality. For the Beast it’s Belle’s love that gives him the chance to become human, and redeem himself by protecting her. For Bruce it’s Tony’s friendship and trust that finally allows him to believe in himself, and trust the Hulk enough to save Tony. Both start out profoundly lonely with no control, but it’s the warmth of others that lets them be truly human again.

Natasha/Mulan

I was almost reluctant to give Mulan to Natasha, simply because the “warrior woman in a men’s group” seemed too cliche, and both are much more than that. But honestly, their similarities were too perfect to ignore. While Mulan is driven by honour, Natasha is driven by loyalty. These qualities seem to go hand in hand. Both believe in fighting for something bigger than themselves. They’re very practical, no-frills people, but they never lose their compassion for others. But their most important common trait is how incredibly gutsy they are. I’m thinking of Natasha vaulting onto the back of an alien jetski going a zillion miles an hour, and Mulan starting a full-scale avalanche, in order for both of them to bring down an army.  Neither are afraid to charge headlong into things. While both are skilled, it’s their daringness and sheer nerve that sets them apart from the pack.

Steve/Hercules

It makes sense to assign Hercules to Thor given the god-factor, but honestly? Hercules is essentially Steve Rogers in a toga. Both begin as skinny, determined kids who are kind of outcasts, but who know that they have bigger things to offer the world. Being the steadfast yet fierce guys they are, they never give up on their dream of being the best they can possibly be. Both are infused with good humour, a dorky enthusiasm and a genuine desire to help others because it’s simply the right thing to do. Take what Phil sings to Hercules, for instance: “It takes more than sinew/Comes down to what’s in you”. Yes they both have heroic super strength and incredible physical abilities, but it’s ultimately their bravery and good hearts that make them the heroes they are.

I don’t know about anybody else, but the lyrics to this song read exactly like the conversations I have with people who for some reason don’t think about movies 24/7. It’s as though my friends are the Lonely Island and I’m Michael Bolton, and they just want to have a sane conversation but I desperately want to talk about a movie I saw

Like we’ll be talking about, I don’t know, a party or other people or something and at first it seems all normal but then I can’t hold back and I’m just like “THIS IS THE TALE OF CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW” and they let me rant for a bit, and then they start the conversation again but meanwhile I’m just there randomly blurting out, “KEIRA KNIGHTLEY” while they get all shifty eyed. And they try to keep the normal conversation going but I’m not done with my feels yet and it’s just like “CAPTAIN JACK ” what? “JOHNNY DEPP” no “DAVY JONES” nope “GIANT SQUID” wrong. And I do try to focus but then it becomes futile to contain my feelings and I just want them to be as excited about the movie as I am and to recognize that my topic is superior to theirs so I’m all “NOW BACK TO THE GOOD PART!”

Anyways, it’s ok Michael Bolton, I know that feel
